Cocktail Suggestions for This Year's Thanksgiving Get Together

By: Shawn Wilson

Every year, I enjoy hosting Thanksgiving dinner. It's a great celebration that I am more than happy to host year after year. This year, I thought I would plan a little cocktail party before dinner and actually enjoy my company before things get too hectic in the kitchen.

I don't make too many things to snack on during cocktails; I like to keep it strictly to drinks if I can. That way, it ensures that all the food I have worked so hard to prepare will get eaten. Sometimes I'll prepare cheese and crackers or bread sticks to snack on, but never anything too starchy that will fill them up too soon.

Besides, a cocktail party is about just that, the cocktail and with any good cocktail recipe; the proof is in the pudding. If it's really good, your guests won't want or need any food to accompany it.

This is a simple recipe that I found and it tastes very good, especially if you like bourbon whiskey! I like to enjoy a good scotch every now and then and the same goes for bourbon whiskey.

It's a little different from the standard 'on the rocks' that I'm used to, but I think you will agree it's just as good and gives it an added flare of color with the cranberry juice.

1-ounce bourbon whiskey (I prefer Jack Daniel's)
1-ounce brandy
1 squeeze limejuice
3-4 oz cranberry juice

I make them all individually, but you can certainly make a pitcher full and save time by doubling or tripling the recipe. You can also play with the ingredients to make it suit your taste; if you want less POW and more sweet, then add more cranberry juice, it's really up to you. I serve it up over ice in a highball glass.

Serve it to your guests as quickly as possible because like any good scotch, you want to savor and enjoy this drink slowly. I know of some who gulp theirs down, but this is a great drink to sip slowly and allow all of the flavors to come through.

I can guarantee you after one of these, ok maybe a couple, you won't mind anyone's opinions or won't care if a dreaded relative sits next to you during Thanksgiving dinner! Just sit back, smile and keeping sipping your brandy! I don't care what anyone says, alcohol sometimes really just does make the pain go away!
