Dating Someone Your Family Does Not Approve Of

Dating is tough enough and then when you have family members that want to weigh in on who you date, it can be even more difficult. If you have met someone that you really like to spend time with and seems to appreciate your company as well you were probably excited to introduce them to your family.

You may have been shocked and a little bit hurt to find that your family wasn't nearly as accepting as you thought they would be of your new date. Now that you know how they feel, what do you do?

It can be difficult to discern how to continue when you are dating someone that your family doesn't approve of. Before you take any action you need to decide how you feel about the situation. Do you really like the person and what they contribute to your life? Are you dating them because you have a genuine interest or because you knew that your family wouldn't approve. When you determine how you feel first and foremost, you will find that it is a lot easier to proceed.

The next thing that you need to do is be up front and honest with the person that you are dating. Let them know that your family has an issue. This may be hard because when we are dating someone we want them to think good about us and our family, but this isn't always possible. When you talk to the person that you are dating, let them know how you feel and that your family has no bearing on the way that you feel about them. Let them know that you want to prove your family wrong about how they feel about them, but you need their help.

After you have decided how you feel and also have talked to your love interest, it's time to talk to your family. Let them know that you are hurt by their disapproval but that it is not changing the way that you feel about the person that you are dating. Tell them that you would like them to give your love interest a chance, to get to know them for the individual that they are. Tell them all of the positive things about your boyfriend or girlfriend and let them know what has made you fall in love or really begin to like the person. Whatever you do, don't make this confrontational as this will only make matters worse.

Give your family space. It may take them awhile to warm up to the person that you are dating or they may never warm up to that person completely. Just ask that your family please respect you, they don't have to love the person that you are dating. If your family is able to do this, this is a step in the right direction. Being patient will allow everyone to cool off and will ensure that you take the high road every time.
