Serious issues in Alcoholics

People that are said to be suffering from alcoholism are found to have an abnormal craving for alcohol. Such individuals are also commonly known as alcoholics.There is no country that does not take the issue of alcoholism seriously. Alcoholics are unable to control the rate of their drinking and very often this obsession begins to negatively affect their lives. Alcoholics suffer job losses, problems in their relationships and the social stigma associated with such states. Many people have put forward suggestions on what might be the cause of alcoholism. A study of the psychological ,genetic and social factors is considered by many to hold the key and answer to alcoholism. Rehabilitation is currently the most common method of curing alcoholism.

The word alcoholism is not a common term amongst medical practicioners. Instead shorter phrases are used to define the level of use of alcohol.Light drinking disorders are referred to as problem drinking or alcohol abuse whilst more severe cases are classified as Alcohol depenedence.

In many cases, the negative effects of Alcohol dependence is not sufficient enough to cause alcoholics to drop the habit. They are so used to alcohol that they are unable stop drinking. These individuals are found to develop severe withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating and anxiety when they are unable to have a drink. They are also found to develop high alcohol tolernance .

Statistics put the number of people suffering from alcohol at well over 76 million.

Recent insight in genetic studies have revealed that genes of an individual to play a role in the possibility of him developing alcohol dependence. For instance, if a twin is shown to have a dependence on alcohol, then the chances are high that so also will the other twin. This is one of the underlying reasons behind the growing trend of treating alcoholism as a disease.

Aside from the social stigma found with heavy drinking, the condition also results in a number of negative health results. For example, regular use of alcohol has been shown to cause damage to the heart muscle. Alcohol abuse is also one of the major causes of liver damage. When alcohol is drank by a pregnant woman, she exposes her child to the possibility of being born with fetal alcohol syndrome. In large enough quantities, drinking alcohol will result in death.
