The Process of Starting a Franchise

By: Jane Dawson

If you've picked out the perfect franchise for you, (meaning your pick was based on what you feel is a perfect match for your strong points, merged with sufficient market research to know that it's a fairly good chance to succeed in your area) then being the owner of this franchise should be a reasonably simple proposal. Why would you want to make things complicated? You're investing in a franchise because;

* You would like to have more control of your professional life
* You want a business of your own
* You want to follow another person's business system
* You want to get to market quickly
* You don't want to be unaccompanied in your venture
* You want to form equity

The idea of franchising is very simple. You might be thinking "How simple?"

From Franchising.com:

"In short, franchising is a strategic alliance between groups of people who have specific relationships and responsibilities with a common goal to dominate markets, i.e., to get and keep more customers than their competitors."

So, let's assume you've bought a franchise. Now what?

First off, after your financing follows through, and you've found a worthy location for your business, you'll be scheduled to attend the franchisors conventional training program. You'll probably visit their main office, and spend 3 days to two weeks there. Here's what you'll do;

* You'll go through the operating manual
* You'll learn how to operate their machinery
* You'll learn how to employ people
* You'll learn about various marketing/advertising plans, and how to utilize them
* You'll learn how to sell your products and/or services
* You'll learn how to manage all of your financial statements

You may work in an artificial franchise operation, or you might even visit a currently running local franchisee, and spend time there. The main point is that you'll learn all you'll need to operate your new business on a regular basis. If your franchise is scheduled to have "grand opening," you'll most likely appoint it, and learn how to make it a huge success.

So, when you invest in a franchise of your own, you receive all the training and all the proper tools you'll need to get it off the ground. Normally, there are a few people from the main office on site for a couple of days until you finally launch your new enterprise. They will guide you through any bugs you might experience. (You will have bugs! Just because it's a franchise, doesn't mean everything's going to be flawless.)

Do you see how easy this really is? You purchase the franchise, you find a really good location, (In most cases, your franchisor will help you find a profitable location) you run through an in-depth, conventional training process, you plan for your grand opening, and you OPEN! You only had to solve a relatively small amount of things required to get your new business off the ground during this entire process. (There is a great deal of effort on your end, but it's hell of a lot less than you doing all by yourself.)

Now, I never told you that all of this would be simple. It's back breaking work, and you'll be doing most of the heavy lifting. The franchisor will be there for you at the start and less and less as you start developing into a mature small business owner.

Subsequently, you have a system to use. You have all the required tools to use in your franchise. You have a business plan. You have support from the franchisor when it's needed. How easy is that?
