Top Five Bands Beginning With G

By: Maxine Clarke

It is often said that 'music has the charms to soothe a savage beast', and certainly there are a great number of musical greats to please the masses. Yet for many, the need to uncover an hitherto unheard of artist is something that excites and inspires.

In an effort to aid those looking for something new to experience, this article can provide a number of recommendations. So why not take a read of the Top Five Bands Beginning With G, nip out to the local music store and treat your ears to a variety of aural delights.

Glassjaw: One of my all time favourite bands, somewhat surprisingly Glassjaw's influence has far exceeded their popularity. Debut album, Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence, is an absolute masterpiece in the genre of hardcore and post-punk. Daryl Palumbo undoubtedly has one of the greatest voices and vocal deliveries of the past 20 years, with the wit, ferocity and sheer emotion to be felt from his ear-shattering screams and delicate phrasing a wonder to behold.

Having caught them on a recent, almost 'comeback', tour, I was still blown away by the power of the band and longed for the day to see them at their prime in the late 90s. It was a shame that I never had the chance due to Palumbo's illness cancelling the London date I was scheduled to attend.

Green Day: Anyone who hasn't heard of Green Day or know at least a couple of tracks must've been living in complete solitude or under a rock for the past 15 years. Their brand of pop-punk has taken over the mainstream, much to the ire of punk traditionalists. It may well be the case that their music is not as raw and hard as others from their scene, but the simple fact is a good song is a good song... and Green Day are the masters at writing good songs!

Godhead: Not being a huge fan of goth music, I was pleasantly surprised to be hugely entertained by a band called Godhead that I came across in 2001. At the time they were supporting Marilyn Manson and were the only artist to be signed to Manson's short-lived record label Posthuman. The album released via the label, 2000 Years of Human Error, contained a number of atmosphere dance/metal tracks that were both excellently crafted and produced. The album also contained an intriguing cover of Eleanor Rigby!

Goldfinger: Ska-punk band Goldfinger came to my attention (like many hitherto unknown bands) through the Burnout and Tony Hawks computer game franchises. Their infectious sing-along tracks are the perfect soundtrack to disenfranchised youths, yet perhaps the generic feel of their music - think punk by numbers - has somewhat limited their appeal to a wider market. That being said, their animal rights message and the political nature of the band make them a definite addition to the list.

Garbage: The debut album from Garbage is enough to guarantee the Scottish/America quartet a spot on the Top 5 list. Although much of the later work became extremely mainstream and over-produced, the initial darkness and almost industrial feel of earlier work led to the band touring with Smashing Pumpkins. And lets face, any band deemed worthy to open for Billy Corgan must've been doing something right!
