Top Five Bands Beginning With H

By: Maxine Clarke

'Music makes the world go round, the world go round, the world go round. Music makes the world go round, all day long'. Ne'er a true word spoke than this timeless nursery rhyme. But what music is responsible for making the world go around?

This article takes a look at just five bands that have produced unforgettable albums over the years. It is your duty to go out and listen to them... else the world will not go round and you will be held accountable!

Hell Is For Heroes: It seems incredible that Hell Is For Heroes remain something of an over-shadowed entity among British bands. Formed in 2000 following the demise of pop-punk band Symposium, the band would not release an album until 2003, with The Neon Handshake cementing the popularity the group were achieving through vibrant live shows. The album remains the most complete work by the quintet, with standout tracks including You Drove Me To It and I Can Climb Mountains. It is regrettable, then, that the band are to go on indefinite hiatus after a short tour in November.

Hundred Reasons: Another British band achieving cult status is Hundred Reasons. Debut album Ideas Above Our Station brought to wider attention the group's brand of post-rock, drawing critical acclaim and spawning a number of singles. More recent releases have shown a more mature sound, in part thanks to the production of guitarist Larry Hibbert.

Helmet: Fans of Helmet declare the band as one of the all-time greats, while many others will be familiar with their style through the significant influence the group had on those that followed. The brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Page Hamilton, it is the major label debut Meantime that is widely regarded at their piece de resistance. One listen to the album and, such is the wide-ranging influence of the band, it will seem instantly familiar.

Hole: Now, I am not the biggest Courtney Love fan, but there is no denying that some of the recordings from Hole are actually quite good. Live Through This is by far the best of the bunch, perhaps in large due to the 'input' supplied by Love's beau, Kurt Cobain. Listen to the album impartially and you will be aware of the influence Cobain undoubtedly had in the dynamics of the tracks.

Head Automatica: What's that you say? Hardcore and disco combined? Are you sure? With Head Automatica the answer is a resounding 'yes'. Side project of Glassjaw vocalist Daryl Palumbo, Head Automatica acts as Palumbo's showcase for his other musical sensibilities and has, to an extent, achieved greater acceptance than that of Glassjaw. Check out debut album Decadence for a number of memorable tracks, including Beating Heart Baby and I Shot William H. Macy.
