The accrediting body checks that the college of university meets the standards and is capable to go on meeting the standards.

There are different accreditation types. The Department of Education as well as Council for Higher Education Accreditation in the USA recognize 3 types. These are National, Specialized and Regional.

National accrediting bodies serve across the country to review entire institutions. Regional bodies operate in 6 regions. Specialized accrediting organizations work throughout the country, though review single purpose institutions or individual programs.

Students can check whether a college or university has earned specialized, regional or national accreditation via the accrediting body’s site or via the CHEA site.
