Who Needs The Extra Classifieds Traffic Anyway?

By: John Donaldson

Surely you've tried advertising on a classified ads site? No, never? Then you probably don't realise how much you are missing out on potential buyers, eager to buy what you have to offer.

Well, you are not the only one, believe me. In fact, many businesses, large, medium and small have never considered classified ads as part of their marketing strategy either. No, never. Yet they should. Classified ads sites are a potential opportunity not to be missed.

The classified ads sector has spawned some huge online players, who generate, on a daily basis, a huge amount of traffic. They are not to be ignored.

An example of one of the giant players in the field is Gumtree, which started out as a small local classified ads and community site eight years ago in London. From small beginnings, the site has grown to the point where it attracts a million visitors monthly. So, would your business benefit from a little Gumtree traffic?

Loot is another big, big player in the classified ads market, combining a massive online presence with some major print publications, including the Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard, Metro and other titles, all part and parcel of the Associated Newspapers organization.

Loot is a houshold name and has been in the buying and selling game for more than two decades. Its total reach is staggering - in the region of 2 million every month, with nearly a quarter of the total visiting the loot.com website alone. Again, wouldn't you benefit from a little Loot traffic? Of course you would!

But it doesn't stop there. For there are other major online classified ads sites which you would be mad to ignore. For example, there's friday-ad.co.uk, classifiedads.com and vivastreet.co.uk, which alone displays around a half million ads at any one time. Incredible numbers and incredible traffic which anyone can make use of.

That's only a few of the top sites. There are many more. Equally, there are hundreds more lesser sites, residing lower down in the pecking order. They shouldn't be ignored either although traffic to these sites is much harder to gauge.

As with the major players, one of the many positives is the ad placing process is usually easy and free. So why not sign up with a few of the minor sites at a time. Shouldn't take you long to do and the combined traffic should be worth the effort. But nothing is guaranteed. Use the sites that return even a modest amount of traffic. Discard the rest.

And while you're looking at various sites, might I put forward my site for consideration? Freebieads.co.uk is a "minor" player at the moment. But who knows in the future?

At the moment, freebieads.co.uk attracts around 5,000 visitors a month and exhibits in the region of 500 ads at any one time. Not in the Gumtree, Loot or Vivastreet league. However, even they started off life as small-time players!

A final thought or two, to lighten the mood. Classified ad sites reflect the world we live in - which at times borders on the weird, judging by some of the ads posted!

Loot, for example, lists a few of the more bizarre ads they've seen, which include the selling of a Mr Whippy ice cream van, Australian shark cartilage, manure, a pencil sharpener collection, an organic wormery and a life size dalek.

Even the British royals have occasionally used Loot, it seems. Apparently, the Duchess of Kent sold her second-hand fridge through Loot in 2004.

There you have it, the ultimate proof. If classified ads are good enough for the British aristocracy, then surely they are good enough for the likes of you and me, too? You bet they are. So what are you waiting for? Get posting those ads!
