Why You Suck at First Dates: Simple Dating Mistakes that Turn Women Off

Dating isn't rocket science. In fact, the rules for having a successful first date are all pretty basic. Maybe that's why so many men overlook them and end up making dating mistakes that turn women off. But whatever the reason, you can improve your dating game and your success with women simply by remembering these basics.

The absolute first rule of dating is to never (under any circumstances) come across as overly mushy or needy. Yes, it is true that women like and even respect a certain amount of sensitivity in men. But they do not want a doe-eyed mama's boy!

If you show your date too much affection, or come across as too mushy or sappy, you are guaranteed to push her way. These kinds of behaviors are usually interpreted as desperation by women; and let's face it, desperation is never attractive.

Just think about it, who would you rather go out on a date with: a woman who was desperate and clingy, or a woman who was cool and secure? Well guess what: she feels exactly the same way. Don't be overly affectionate or start talking about "a relationship" on the first date. If you do, chances are you'll never get a second day anyway.

Another mistake many men make on first dates is talking too much about themselves. Of course, the woman wants to know something about you, and you should feel comfortable carrying on a relaxed conversation that includes your preferences and what your life is all about. But make no mistake: the focus of the conversation should be mostly about her -- not you.

Talking too much about yourself can be interpreted as egotism, or even worse -- insecurity. Either way it's a bad thing on a first date. A good rule of thumb is to ask more questions than you answer. Show interest in her, her life, her job, her family, and her friends. Ask plenty of questions about her life and actually listen to what she has to say. Trust me, she will appreciate it.

Finally, one of the biggest mistakes you can make on a first date actually comes after the date is over. Many men will call or text the woman after the date is finished, presumably to thank her for a nice evening or something like that. In reality, this is a huge mistake. A good rule to follow is to never contact her (whether by phone, text or IM) on the same night as your first date.

Violating this rule can make you appear desperate, clingy, or even some kind of stalker. No matter how much you'd like to talk to her when you get home, just don't do it. Because while there is a chance she would appreciate you making contact the same night as your first date, more often than not she will find it creepy and desperate. Always wait at least until the next day to call (and don't call first thing in the morning either).

While all of these dating mistakes are easily avoidable, you'd be amazed how many men make them. 90% of dating is just getting the basics right; follow these easy rules and you'll get a lot more second dates.
